Richard Albritton, III, seen here in an interview a few months back was allegedly involved in a hit and run crash in downtown Panama City on September 27th.

Panama City Police say Albritton who was a prosecutor at the State Attorney's Office , left the scene. A short time later, officers from the Panama City Police Department found him passed out behind the wheel in the drive-thru lane of the Taco Bell on 23rd Street. Lauren Markham happened to be behind Albritton in line and called 9-11.

"We tapped on his window and he rolled down the window and he was laughing saying, “
Oh, I'm drunk,” and basically got angry with us," Markham said.

In the police report, one of the officers said he smelled a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Albritton's SUV when he arrived on scene, but they didn't arrest him.

Instead, the officers let Albritton's girlfriend take him home go home because he only lived a short distance away.

This action has come under scrutiny from a lot of people. As a result, the three officers who were involved have been suspended without pay.

"These officers that are involved have a very strong work records. They made an error in judgment, they made bad decisions and as a result discipline is coming down," John Van Etten, Panama City's Chief of Police said.

One sergeant was suspended for three days, and both the other officers were suspended for one day.

Albritton faces arraignment October 31st on the misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage.

Two one day suspensions and a three day suspension, WOW!!! This is certainly going to send a message to other cops and officials that provide special favors to their good ‘ole boy pals. Why wasn’t Chief John Van Etten suspended for failing to send a message to, and train, his officers that good ‘ole boy favoritism is prohibited under a zero tolerance policy. Former Chief of Police David Slusser gave now Bay County Sheriff’s Office Chief of Investigations, Captain Jimmy Stanford, a choice to resign or be fired when he mislead an internal investigation at PCPD about the videotaping of a female employee exposing her breasts. Stanford resigned and immediately Guy Tunnell, exercising his good ‘ole boy politics, hired Stanford at BCSO. In a recent case Jimmy Stanford and his brother Troy were identified as suspects in a vicious assault of a victim. Stanford assigned the case to himself and dropped it as unfounded. Steve Meadows prosecuted Troy who is now in State Prison. WOW!!!

What a joke. These officers should be fired. They clearly neglected to do their job because of who he was. If the Chief will not react properly then the state should step in. I say to the voters of Bay County, vote every single one of them out. The State Attorney, the police Chief, etc., anyone who had direct knowledge of this prior to it becoming a media story. These people do not deserve to be in a leadership position in this town.

So sad to see little Ritchie took this path in life. So sad to know my fellow friends are running Bay county this way. Such a shame! Ritchie, if you were any of man...YOU would turn yourself in and serve the charges that should have been charged for. Thankful no persons were killed because of this...yet.

Where is the DUI charge? Blue taking care of Blue again. There all team players. Does the average Joe or Jane get a pass like this?

I WILL remember this and I hope the officers do too!! Like I have always said it is not WHAT but WHO you know and each one of these SWORN TO PROTECT LAW OFFICERS at the very least should be FIRED and charged with reckless endangerment. Bot only did they NOT PROTECT they DID not even uphold the freaking LAW... you morons should be OUT OF WORK.. Next thing it will be a family of 5 killed because ALL of cops and chiefs and captains and DAs are all friends etc....of course they knew him he is a DA and he WAS DRUNK!!!! you can change "dead" but hopefully you can get "stupid" fixed before an innocent life is lost! THE AD should read: Now HIRING: Law abiding DA and SWORN POLICE OFFICERS ONLY

crooked law enforcement, i hope if i'm ever in this situation, I can have the same treatment.

Posted by: Allen Location: Fort Walton Beach on Oct 10, 2008 at 09:03 AM
If this had been me or anybody else not in law enforcement, we would have been jailed and charged with a felony for the DUI. This fosters the premise that it is US against them, as they are immune from the law apparently. If we are all equal, prove it, start writing tickets to the worse traffic violators out there, the police officers themselves, and quit showing fovoritism to anyone. Treat everyone alike. Either ticket and arrest EVERYONE who commits a crime or violation, or quit citing and arresting anyone. Only then will the law be fair and equal.

This is such a shame. It shows how much we are not treated equal due to status. There are people who have made the mistake of driving under the influence and as a result have to pay the consequences no matter how much it disrupts their lives. Then because of this persons name he has nothing to woirry about now. These officers got suspended one day...WOW. Too bad the consequences of a DUI weren't just one day. Looks like everyone got out okay on this one...What a shame!!!!

what about driving while drunk just because of who he was they let him go but if it would have been one of us we would have went to jail then but the cops looking out for there own and wonder why people dont trust the cops some discipline one day just another case of looking out for your own one law for us and a different law for them

One sergeant was suspended for three days, and both the other officers were suspended for one day. This should be the other way around
