Teen Drowns in Pea River Trying to Save Cousin

Another waterway accident has claimed the life of a young Alabamian.

Authorities in Geneva say a teenager drowned moments after saving his 11-year-old cousin from drowning in the Pea River in southeast Alabama.

Geneva Police Chief Frankie Lindsey said Bradley Whiteside of Bellwood apparently was exhausted after the rescue and was pulled under by strong currents in the river.

Witnesses told police the boy managed to surface once, then went under and disappeared.

Emergency personnel recovered Whiteside's body a few hours later.

Lindsey said the drowning occurred at a popular swimming spot near County Road 24.

The Geneva drowning is among several water-related fatalities recorded across the state since the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
