Navarre Dredging Turtle Death

A beach dredging project in Navarre has claimed another rare turtle.

Officials say the sea turtle relocation trawler found the Loggerhead struggling to breathe Friday night and that it appeared its mouth had become caught in the trawler's net.

Boat operators tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate the turtle.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers shut down the project for about 11 hours, but dredging continued after they determined the turtle death was from the relocation equipment and not from the dredging equipment.

The Corps has different standards for the number of sea turtles that can be killed by dredges and trawling vessels.

The Corps recently granted Santa Rosa County a ten-day extension to fill a gap of unrestored beach after dredging was halted because of turtle deaths.
