Beach Police Latest

Panama City Beach City Manager Richard Jackson had the latest and possibly the last word Tuesday on some anonymous complaints against the Beach Police Department.

Four weeks ago, two unsigned complaints showed up at Beach City Hall, accusing some police officers or drinking and having sex on the job, stealing, and practicing selective law enforcement. Both writers called for outside investigations.

But the Florida Department of Law Enforcement refused because of the anonymous nature of the complaints.

When City Councilman Ken Nelson sent his own complaint letter to Jackson last week, beach Police Chief Robert Harding admitted three officers drank beer during last year's Indian Summer Festival, then drove home in their unmarked patrol cars.

But he insisted they did not violate any laws.

Jackson echoed the same thing, saying the officers may have used poor judgment, but did not break any laws.

The department policy on drinking and driving city vehicles has now been changed to prohibit that activity.
