One of the Republicans running for the U.S. Senate in Florida says it’s time for a change in our relationship with Cuba.
The island nation just 90 miles south of Florida is the only communist government left in the western hemisphere and it’s been under an American embargo since 1961. Trade and travel to Cuba is restricted by the feds.
U.S. Senate candidate LeRoy Collins says the U.S. needs to start talking with its neighbor.
"The fact is that Cuba is there and we trade with other communist countries and we ought to expect the same financial concessions from Cuba that we do from them, in order to trade with them. I think the time has come we need to open that dialogue."
Collins is running for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Bill Nelson, but first he has to face Katherine Harris in the Republican primary.
