Supreme Court Denies Childers Sentence Stay in Bribery Case

Former Florida Senate President W.D. Childers will begin serving a prison term for bribery next Monday.

The Florida Supreme Court refused Wednesday to delay his sentence pending an appeal. The conviction stems from Childers' service as an Escambia County commissioner after he was forced out of the Senate in 2000 by term limits.

The 72-year-old Republican from Pensacola was sentenced to three and a half years in prison.

Childers was convicted of bribing another Escambia commissioner, Willie Junior, to vote for the purchase of a defunct soccer complex in 2001.

Junior testified that Childers gave him a "cooking pot full of cash."
