Bay County School officials are also trying to prevent students from being harassed online. The state of Florida directed each school board to create a policy regarding cyber bullying and electronic harassment.

Bay County School officials approved their policy for advertisement Wednesday. It goes as far as making cyber bullying an expellable offense, if administrators deem the punishment necessary.

School board chair Donna Allen says she hopes it won't ever come to that and that this policy could actually prevent it.

"I do believe it's a preventative measure so that we don't have some of the problems that they've had in the state. We're kind of being proactive with this, but this did come from the state telling us we needed to. But we haven't had a large problem with that we're just being very proactive," said Donna Allen, Bay County School board chair.

The board will have to advertise the proposed policy and hold a hearing to receive public comment.
