There was an unusual sighting near Deerpoint Dam Thursday. At least three manatees showed up in North Bay.
A large manatee made several appearances on the saltwater side of the dam and drawdown gates.
There were also two smaller manatees spotted under the catwalk located along the North Bay side of the dam.
The gentle creatures are usually found in south and central Florida and the West Indies. They are being downgraded from an endangered species to a threatened species.
Manatees have been seen on a few occasions in area waters in the past, but normally they don’t make it this far north to the panhandle.
