The Hiland Park man who chained himself to his power meter on Thursday to save his 5-year-old's life is breathing a sigh of relief.

The power bill has been paid by two people and you may remember one of the donors.

Dawn Amora is the adoptive mother of handicapped Marrisa Amora. In May Gov. Charlie Crist signed a compensation bill for $3 million for the abuse she suffered while under DCF's care.

Marissa was badly beaten by her birth mother's boyfriend--and now has permanent brain damage.

Like Marissa, Makayla's birth mother's choices permanently harmed her too. The 5-year-old suffers from fetal alcohol syndrome and cerebral palsy.

Kathy Duncan says more than the Amora's financial support it's just nice to know they're not alone.

"No one understands until you've been there and I've been there."

Dawn Amora, the woman who paid the Duncan's electric bill says the money did not come from her daughter's settlement money.

Amora, who operates a Jackson County Restaurant says it came from her own personal savings account.

Amora paid the bill up through January, an anonymous donar paid an undisclosed amount of money and local realtor Don Nations paid $2,000.

Did you all see that this made the national headlines on AOL. It was disgusting the way they made it out to seem like this family was being persecuted. I also question whether or not they really needed the money or why he doesn't work?????

I was just curious instead of chaining himself all day to the powerbox, Why don't he go try to find a job so when the next bill comes he can pay it himself.

I feel so sorry for this little girl. Alot of the comments are very true, when the same thing happened last year he also said then that he had been out of work for a year. So he is really saying is that he had been out of work for a least 2 years. Mrs. Duncan claims that there are medical bills but she gets medicaid because she is an adopted child. So there are no medical bills for this little girl. Also maybe there needs to be a little more investigation on this family by children services to find out exactly where all the money goes that does come into this household. I have a friend that has a disabled abled child and she gets a monthly check for him. So I will have to assume that they get one also. So if they do not have any medical bills and they receive a check for this little girl then where does all there money go.Oh it must go to there cigarettes and other more inportant stuff. Please don't be a chump next time this happens make sure that we as a community investigate first.

My goodness, that poor little girl. It's a wonderful thing that these people adopted her...special people for special children mean blessings for Makayla. However, I remember these people doing the same thing last year! Their bill was then paid current & paid forward. Also, Gulf Power knows about the little girl's situation & goes above & beyond, every time, to help this family (& others in the same situation). They can only do so much. Are these people going to do this a third time, once the bill comes due again? Shame on them for taking advantage of caring citizens. In the end, though, all that matters is that this little girl is getting the care she needs & the love she deserves.

I always give the extra dollar on my power bill for those who can not afford to pay their bill. I was under the impression it would be used for situations like this not to line the pockets of big-wigs.

Well I fill sorry for the little girl here. I think that she needs to be put with a family to can better provide for her, and not just lay around to get handouts and smoke cigarettes all day. If he could chain himself to the power meter, why can't he go to walmart and handout shopping carts like other people. I go to walmart and other places like Burger King and Mcdonalds and there is always someone there that is 75 years old or so and working. I know that probably have worst problems that he does so whats his lazy excuse. What about his wife is she to good to go out and get a job? I look in the newspaper everyday and someone is always looking for someone to hire. Duncan if you need a job contact me and I will allow you to do some yard work for me. I mean why not everyone else does what they have to do to support there family

I wish I had the luck these people have. Last year this same thing happened, and someone else stepped up and paid their bill. Since it worked one time, they did it again, and again, it worked. This is a sad state of affairs for this child, who does not deserve the medical problems she has to live with the rest of her life, and does not deserve the parents who were chosen for her. Take some of that money, buy yourself some clothes, and get a job like every other person struggling to pay bills. I know people who are paying bills, working 2 jobs, and taking chemo treatments every month for cancer. Stop this laziness and get to work.

I would'nt give this guy one cent. Get off your rear end pal, and get a job like all the rest of us.

It looks this family is useing the good hearted locals & state to support their sorry life style. can afford cigarettes but not needed services for the child. The child should be taken away & placed in a safe careing enviroment. Media outlets should not broadcast for donations until the true need is investigated. Child Services need to get involved in this one.

I had tears in my eyes when I read that Makayla's family had a benefactor. There are still good people in this world, thank the good Lord!

I couldnt believe the picture in the paper this morning of these parents. It is apparent that they can afford cigarettes, but cant pay any toward electricity. The child is on a trach and the mother is smoking in the house? Please take this child from these lazy people and find her a good home.

This is sick! So this lazy no good man can get everything for nothing. Come on people lets help the ones that really need it. Your heart is in the right place but the check went to the wrong family

I cant help but think that if the father di dnot get up from his chained chair and get a job, that this would no tbe an issue in the first place. I know the economy is bad, but seriously who can't get a job in a year. He could pick up cans and make enough for the power bill.

Posted by: Keith Location: Panama City on Nov 14, 2008 at 10:26 PM
Congratulations Dad, you get to sit around for another year and do absolutely nothing. Better get in line for the free holiday meals and toys programs. It is after all close to Christmas. Again, I feel horrible for the little girl. Mostly because she is living with these two! I thought Children and Family services monitored these things. How about the realtor who gave the cash offer him a job cleaning up around properties instead of the handout. Let see if he takes it. Good luck to the girl, maybe someone responsible will take over her care.

I would like to thank the people that made the donations for the Duncan's. With the economy the way that it is you are all an inspiration to us all.
