The historic Apalachicola State Bank went up in flames over the weekend after a seafood truck slammed into it. Bank officials are already planning to rebuild.
Local residents were shocked to see the bank burn.
The Apalachicola State Bank suffered severe fire damage when 43-year-old Joseph Mixon drove a Ward and Sons Seafood truck into the building.
Bobby Varnes, Apalachicola Police Chief, said, "The truck tried to make the right turn and went on two wheels and smashed right into the bank."
Mixon was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. He's since been released, but it will be quite some time before the bank is able to overcome its serious damages.
Milton Houseman, a customer, said, "Makes me feel terrible. I sure do. We came on over; I hated to see it ‘cause it hasn't been too long this improvement. I just thought it was one of the finest buildings in the city."
Darrell Smith, another customer, added, "Shocked, really shocked ‘cause I do business here a lot. Found out it happened and I was shocked, you know."
Security doesn't seem to be an issue. The bank has hired private security while they clear the bank, and safety deposit box holders will be able to gather their belongings and transfer them to another branch.
"They moved a lot of stuff out over the weekend. I think today they're supposed to get the rest, but the bank was secure at all times."
Terry Dubose, Chairman of the Board of Coastal Community Bank, which owns Apalachicola State Bank, says that they are aiming to have little to no interruption of service.
Customers can use the temporary office at 183 Avenue East in Apalachicola, as well as the branches in East Point and Carrabelle.
There had been some speculation about whether or not this was an accident.
"The investigation is still pending. I've heard rumors that, you know, that it might have been intentional. We don't want to speculate ‘cause we don't know for sure, but FHP is working that part of it."
Right now state troopers say they are investigating the fire as an accidental crash and no charges have been filed against Mixon.
Coastal Community Bank will set up a mobile bank by next Monday for customers to have access to teller service. Dubose says they are already in talks with contractors to begin rebuilding on the same lot in the next few months.
