One of Panama City's landmarks is back in place after being torn down earlier this year. Friday morning the Bay High School senior class took part in a dedication ceremony for the new bay high tornado. The original tornado had to be torn down because it had become a safety hazard.
Plaques were presented to all the members of the community who helped construct and fund the project. Bay Tank and Fabrication constructed the majority of the tornado. Those present from the company included Terry Wyatt, President; Scott Vanghel, Quote Control Manager; Kevin Loveless, Auto CAD; Adam Gore, Welder; Joshua Cowling, Welder; and Ray Broussard, Shop Manager.
Terry Barr of Fastenal provided large bolts to bolt the tornado down. Harold Dykes of Bay Brokers provided the wire, plaster and primer paint.
Mike Renken of Renken Stucco did the stucco work. Jerry Register and his son, Grant, painted the tornado.
The senior class purchased the monument plate which reads: Tornado II: erected 2008 with support from the Bay High community.
Principal Mackie Owens also thanked student Malorie Vanghel for her efforts and Chris Calohan for spearheading the project.
Mike McDonald from the Air Force research lab at Tyndall developed the construction concept.
"It's just a symbol of our pride and what it means to be a part of Bay High and it wouldn't be the same driving down Harrison Avenue without a tornado on the left side of the street," said Wes Tindell, senior class president.
"Actually, it's kind of a landmark in Panama City that people have looked over at Bay High School for many, many years and saw the tornado sitting there and we just needed to put one back because it is Bay High School and that's what we are all about," said Mackie Owens, Bay High School Principal.
