The head of the United Auto workers said the U.S. cannot afford to let one of the big three collapse.

On Sunday Ron Gettelfinger publicly announced the reasons why it is so important for the government to rescue the auto industry.

"What we need to do is remember that the entire industry around the world has been impacted by this economic downturn, it’s not just here in the United States,” said Ron Gettelfinger, UAW President. “This is not a bailout; this is a loan -- bridge loan that will get us through until we can take a longer term look at exactly what needs to be done in the industry."

Carmakers want $25 billion from Uncle Sam.

Chrysler, Ford and GM will submit plans to Congress Tuesday on how they plan to use the money.

Boy, this is a Catch-22. We can't afford to let these over-unionized, private jet-flyin' porkers collapse, but we sure as heck can't afford to bail 'em out. I had a cousin like that once.
