Destin plastic surgery has taken down their billboard near the Hurlburt field gates that supported American troops. Now most people would agree there's nothing wrong with supporting our troops.
But some, including air force commanders, had a problem with this particular display, refusing to run a print version of the ad in 2-different military publications.
There's nothing left of the billboard advertisement that drew some controversial attention.
Earlier this week this billboard space on Martin Luther King Blvd. near Hulrburt Field's back gate, sported an ad for Destin Plastic Surgery Center. This is what it looked like.
"We tested the ad with many people. Former military, spouses of military people and no one had any offense to it. In fact people thought it was funny. We were told the flag in the background was against military etiquette and we didn't want to disrespect the military."
Doctors say they wanted to express their appreciation to the clinic's large number of military patients.
The word "support" in the slogan phrase "we support our troops" was a pun for their profession.
Doctors say a lot of thought went into the ad, hoping it would entertain the troops.
They even used one of their employee patients as the model. Tricia works at the clinic and has a special attachment to the image. Her husband actually took the picture of her post-surgery body.
"We did it with good intentions to boost the morale for the troops. No harm was intended by it."
"Even though clinic staff says they hadn't received any complaints about the billboard, doctors decided to take the image down. They said they'd rather replace the ad than risk the chance of offending someone."
"If they feel strongly that it needs to be in the forefront of an advertisement or any other print material we certainly respect that and felt like we should do the same thing."
Even though the new ad doesn't mention the troops, the doctors and staff want military men and women to know Destin Plastic Surgery Center supports them through thick and thin.
The new, tamer billboard will go up in the same location early next week.
