This week marks the second anniversary of a deadly plane crash in southern Washington County.

Five Destin residents died on their way to the Bahamas for Christmas when their twin engine Cessna crashed near the Greenhead community.

An interim investigation report by the National Transportation Safety Board points strongly towards bad weather being the culprit. The pilot tried to avoid the rough weather as the private plane left the Destin airport on the morning of December 22nd, 2006.

The plane ended up flying through a 15-mile stretch of very severe thunderstorms.

The NTSB report says those intense storms were a Class Five on a scale of 1 to 6.

They carried severe turbulence, heavy rain, lighting and probably hail.

The pilot had several thousand hours of flight experience in sophisticated military and civilian aircraft. He had logged more than 8,000 hours as a flight instructor and was certified as a test pilot.

The NTSB report says an examination of the engines shows no signs of mechanical failure.

The interim report does not give an indication of when the National Transportation Safety Board will issue its final report.
