Last month Representative Ray Sansom announced he'd be taking a high-paying job at North West Florida State College the day after he was elected speaker of the house.
Since then, Sansom has come under fire for his close relationship with the school.
A Clearwater man has filed a complaint with the Florida Commission on ethics requesting a closer look at Samson’s actions.
Accusations of favoritism, a possible Sunshine law violation, and now an ethics review.
Representative Ray Sansom has had a rough start as speaker of the house.
For 10 years, Jerry Melvin served as a Florida State representative.
Now he hosts an am talk radio show. Melvin says his callers want answers and an ethics review will force Sansom to explain his actions.
Jerry Melvin, a former state rep., says, "The legislature takes ethics charges very seriously and I would say yes a full investigation will be made on the charge right away."
As chairman of the house budget and policy council, Sansom appropriated $25.5 million to NWF State College.
Suspicions that his close relationship with the school had a personal gain came the day after Sansom was sworn in as house speaker.
That's the day administrators announced Sansom had accepted an unadvertised part-time job with the college for $110,000 a year.
Some people in the community say they're not upset that Rep. Sansom will be working at the college, they say they are troubled by the way he got the job."
"If I’d been Dr. Richburg I would have advertised that position so that anybody that was interested could apply and Rep. Sansom could apply the same way and then they could have chosen him from the group and there would have been no concern. Right now it just looks like, as far as the callers are sayings, it just looks like it was underhanded."
Last month, we spoke to the president of the college, Dr. Bob Richburg.
He says he still stands by his claims that Sansom was hired based solely on his credentials.
Dr. Bob Richburg, NWF State College President, says, “What's going on here is that a qualified person from North West Florida was hired by North West Florida State College to serve a very significant job."
The Florida Commission on Ethics will meet on January 23. It's unsure if the commission will review Sansom's case at that time.
