Bay County Sheriff's have arrested a husband and wife on Wednesday, after they were caught stealing blank checks and jewelry from the wife’s parents.

Twenty-three-year-old Melvin Jason Holcombe and wife, 19-year-old Alexis Gunnels Holcombe, were both living with Alexis's parents at the time of the theft. The couple left the home with jewelry and personal checks of the parents and went on a check writing spree, selling the jewelry.

On January 8, 2009, the parents of the woman contacted the BCSO to file a complaint.

Checks were turning up at her bank and appeared to have been signed by the woman’s daughter. A few days later the woman discovered that about $5000 in jewelry had also been stolen.

While out working this case, the investigator received information that the couple was in the area of 15th Street and East Avenue.

The investigator was not far from that location and spotted Alexis Gunnels Holcombe with her husband, Melvin Jason Holcombe in their red Taurus.

The couple was brought in for questioning and stated they had sold the jewelry and written checks for food, gas, and cash and with the cash they purchased crack cocaine. Although they had for the most part been living in their car, they had also written checks to area motels.

Melvin Jason Holcombe, is charged with seven counts of Uttering a Forged Instrument and one count of Grand Theft.

His wife Alexis Gunnels Holcombe, was charged with 20 counts of Forgery and two counts of Grand Theft.

Both have been taken to the Bay County Jail for booking.
