Tropical Storm Florence is gaining strength in the open Atlantic and could become a hurricane by the weekend, but forecasters say it's too soon to tell if it would reach the United States.
Florence has sustained winds near 50 miles an hour. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami say it could strengthen into a hurricane as early as Friday.
The storm is about 1,300 miles southeast of Bermuda and is moving west-northwest at about 12 miles an hour.
It poses no immediate threat to land, but forecasters say its large size could be a concern later in the week.
