Some television stations have already made the transition to digital television and are no longer broadcasting an analog signal.

The F-C-C extended the deadline for all stations to switch to June, after the beginning of the 2009 hurricane season.

Those battery operated portable analog T.V.'s you've come to depend-on after a storm, will no longer pick up a signal.

If you still use an antennae to watch T.V. you should know that once all television stations make the switch to a digital signal in June you'll need a converter box to get a signal.

Panama City Beach Radio Shack Store Manager James Anderson says, "Anybody that's trying to get an off air signal on a non digital television, those people that don't have cable or satellite will have to have a digital converter box to pick up their local channels."

If you have a battery powered analog T.V. for emergencies, that converter box won't do you any good.

"If you're power is out and you have a battery operated television that's analog it will not pick up any of the digital stations," adds Anderson.

You can purchase a digital battery powered television. With it you won't need a converter box and if your power is out during an emergency it's the only way you'll pick up a digital signal . But it isn't cheap.

"The 7 inch portable television is 200-hundred dollars it comes with a rechargeable battery pack and an antennae, and the built in digital tuner so you'll be able to get all your emergency signals things of that nature," Anderson says.

The new deadline to switch to digital television is June 12th, two weeks after the start of hurricane season

Anderson says any weather radio, or portable television, is a good investment if you're caught in a storm, because waiting could leave you without a signal.

Hurricane season begins June 1st.

The televisions are sold at radio shack, and on amazon.com

Re: Battery Powered Digital TV Converter. I looked all over for a digital tv antenna. I found a battery operated digital TV converter kit that is available at http://www.batterysavers.com/Battery_Operated_Digital_TV_Converter.htm . It seems easy to set up and easy to use. Has anyone ever had any experience with this before? I'm buying one tonight to try it out. Please post if anyone ever used this kit before.

Battery-powered TVs will NOT be obsolete after the digital transition, and you don't need to spend $200 on a new battery TV. Viewers who plan ahead can buy a digital converter for battery TVs that runs on 12 volts, and add a simple power source from two lantern batteries.
