High School Majors - Complete List for Bay County

This spring state lawmakers passed a bill that requires high school students to declare a major now, not when they get to college.

The change was part of a proposal called the A ++ Education Bill, which Gov. Jeb Bush approved.

Bay County is getting ready to implement this state law. Ninth graders won't have to declare a major until next year, but Bay District School Board members have to finalize they're course offering now.

The high school major issue is on the board's agenda for next Wednesday's meeting. They have to approve detailed course offerings and get that information to the Department of Education by October 1.

Some critics say many college students have difficulty selecting a major course of studies, so how are high schoolers going to make such a big decision, but we're told it won't be as extreme as some might think.

Carla Lovett, Assistant Supervisor, said, "All the majors will require each school year they'll take one course, so a major actually consists of four courses you take each year in high school, so it really will not have a major impact on the other kinds of things that they would take."
