Superintendent Bill Husfelt has named new principals for Margaret K. Lewis School, Oscar Patterson Elementary Magnet School and Parker Elementary School pending School Board approval. Current principals at the three schools will retire this school year.

Ann Walsingham, currently the principal at Millville Elementary School, will remain at the school as principal when the students and staff from Margaret K. Lewis School move to the Millville school site.

Her interest in teaching grew from a job she took as a paraprofessional at Merriam Cherry Street Elementary School before she became a long-term substitute in a classroom for Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students. It was there that she discovered her love of teaching, especially teaching students with severe disabilities. She was encouraged by ESE teachers and her principal to pursue a degree in Education. For more than 20 years she has taught in area elementary schools taking her first position as an administrator in 1993. Most of her career has been dedicated to the education of students with disabilities.

Walsingham grew up in Panama City attending Southport Elementary School, Mowat Junior High School and Bay High School. She graduated from Gulf Coast Community College. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and master’s in Educational Leadership/Administration from Florida State University-Panama City.

Angela Hutchinson will move from Hiland Park Elementary School to serve as principal of Oscar Patterson Elementary Magnet School.

Hutchinson is a native of Jackson County. She moved to Panama City to attend Gulf Coast Community College where she received an AA degree in 1987. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degree from Florida State University and a specialist’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of West Florida.

She started her teaching career in Jefferson County and moved back to Panama City to take a teaching position at Oscar Patterson Elementary in 1993. Her administrative experience includes Assistant Principal of Tyndall Elementary School in 1999, District Elementary Supervisor at the district level in 2005 and Principal of Hiland Park Elementary School since 2007. Throughout her career Hutchinson has been involved in various professional development opportunities, served on and chaired many district level committees, and received many accolades.

“While leaving Hiland Park is bittersweet, I am excited about my new assignment at Patterson. I look forward to working with staff and students and building upon the great programs and practices already in place,” Hutchinson commented.

Anna McLain will take the helm of Parker Elementary School after serving as an interim principal at several school sites over the past school year.

Her teaching experience spans both elementary and middle school in a number of states including Virginia, Arizona, and New York, and Toronto, Canada. Beginning in 1989 in Bay County, she taught 10 years at Tyndall Elementary School and two years at Callaway Elementary School. Her first administrative post was as an assistant principal at Jinks Middle School where she also served as the principal for eight years.

McLain holds a bachelor’s degree in Education from Radford University and a master’s from George Washington University.

McLain said, “I am excited to be coming back to the elementary school. Having broad experiences at both the elementary and middle school levels, I feel I understand the necessary academic, social, and physical skills that students need to master to become successful at all levels. I believe that providing students with a environment where they are challenged with high expectations, they can achieve far and beyond their dreams.”
