Last year, the beach police department lost one of its own when Sgt. Kevin Kight was murdered during a routine traffic stop on Front Beach Road at Edgewater.
When his accused killer, Robert J. Bailey goes on trial, there will be a new judge handling the case.
Circuit Judge Glenn Hess has recused himself from the case, citing possible conflict of interest.
Judge Hess didn’t elaborate on what that potential conflict might be.
The case has been reassigned to Circuit Judge Michael Overstreet.
Bailey's defense team has been concentrating its efforts on trying to get the death penalty eliminated from consideration in the case.
