It was payday Wednesday afternoon for the Humane Society of Bay County after a local organization raised a nice chunk of change for a good cause.

The Meghan Burkhart Smith Foundation along with several local businesses including Pelican Real Estate on 23rd Street, held a community-wide charity yard sale on May 2nd and managed to raise close to $3500.

Well, Tuesday afternoon, organizers, agents, family and staff got together to hand over that money. All proceeds from the yard sale were donated to the Humane Society in memory of Meghan Burkhart Smith who died in January.

"Today we donated a $3,458 check to the Humane Society of Bay County in honor of Meghan Burkhart Smith,” said Pelican Real Estate's Vaughn VanAmburg. “The foundation started earlier this year after an unfortunate accident and we want to continue her legacy and support causes that were close to her heart."

Humane Society of Bay County President, Elke McCoy tells NewsChannel 7, "The Humane Society of Bay County is the only no-kill shelter in the area and is pleased to have Pelican Real Estate honor us with this check in honor of Meghan Burkhart Smith who also loved animals as much as we do. It really helps us with a continuous effort to keep animals alive and find forever homes for them."

All of this was made possible by local businesses including: Pelican Real Estate friends, family and agents, as well as; Hilton, Diamond Title, Regions Bank, Green Central Station, Freeport Cruisers and ArtGraphics.
