Apalach Hit Hard by Twister

The city of Apalachicola is in the dark this weekend after a Friday night tornado caused considerable damage in the community.

Butch Baker, Franklin County Emergencvy Management Director says the County's hospital was damaged, a burger King restaurant was destroyed, several homes were demolished and lots of other damage was scattered.

The power substaion serving the town was destroyed and power is expected to be off in the entire town all weekend.

A state of Emergency has been declared in the area and the Red Cross has set up a feeding station downtown.

Baker says even though the Weems Memorial hospital was damaged and several patients were transferred to Panama City hospitals, they are operating on emergency power and treating minor injury cases from the tornado.

Baker says its too early for damage estimates, but he said it would be considerable.

Progress Energy is working to get the power restored. Estimates are it will take several days before electricity is back on in Apalachicola.
