What seems to be a 100-year-old barge in the Gulf of Mexico has been exposed.
Waves revealed planking and three iron straps a few feet off an Air Force test site on Okaloosa Island.
University of West Florida nautical archaeologists are surveying the site. One graduate student says it could have hauled coal or timber.
Researchers say the vessel featured treenails wooden pegs that secured pieces of the barge and then swelled to make watertight seals.
The barge will be cataloged as a wreck with the state but not as a cultural site demanding preservation.
