We're getting a better picture of how a fire that took the lives of three people in Springfield unfolded through the night.
Three-month-old Breanna Stone was the youngest victim of the fire. A friend close to the family told Newschannel 7 it was the daughter of Vickie Smith, Becky Stone, the mom of the three-year-old victim, who first noticed the flames coming apparently from a cigarette in her mom's mouth.
Stone ran to neighbors pleading for help to get her mother, a senior citizen and recovering from getting hit by a car just days before, her baby daughter, and a family friend out of the house in time, and at about the same time, Willard Davis, Vickie Smith's boyfriend, was doing his best to get Smith out of the house.
But then an explosion severely injured Davis and killed Smith, three-month-old Stone, and another family friend. Ironically, with visitors in and out of the house checking up on Smith from her previous accident, friends say the death toll could have been even greater.
Christina Manbevers, a family friend, said, "My parents came and go me early last night. I was supposed to stay here, but I didn't. They had a bad feeling."
Tonight the Springfield Fire Department and the state fire marshal are both investigating this blaze. They're asking you to call the Springfield Police Department at 872-7545 if you have any details that could paint a clearer picture in this case.
