AAA is predicting a drop in nationwide travel over the 4th of July weekend, but Florida may see a slight increase. Tourism revenue was up 2.8 million dollars over estimates in May. Gas prices will play a roll in how many tourists visit Florida this summer.

Three year old Sebastian can’t wait till the 4th of July. That’s when he’ll meet his favorite Disney character.

“See Mickey Mouse.”

Tourism tax collections were up 2.8 million dollars in May. Brenda Smith says AAA credits falling prices for the increase.

“There are tremendous discounts for hotels, for entertainment. They are changing daily.”

Still the recession and gas prices threaten summer travel they’ll keep Mariana Szeinkierman close to home over the 4th.

“You can’t go anywhere because the gas is so expensive.”

But the cost of gas isn’t expected to be as big of a deterrent was it was a year ago. In July 2008, the price of a gallon of gas broke the four dollar mark. In fact, in the past day or two the price of gasoline at many locations in Bay County/Panama City has dropped 8 cents to a dime a gallon.

But even though prices are down, Jim Smith of the Florida Petrolium Council thinks the memory of last year’s pain at the pump could keep people from traveling.

“I really think a lesson was learned by the consumer, who happens to have one of the biggest impacts on what the price of gas is.”

Gas prices won’t keep Jennifer Smith home for the holiday. She’s going to the beach with friends.

“The way we beat it is with the carpool. We’re all going to chip in for gas, groceries, everything. Make it a group effort.”

And if more people find creative ways to spend their money in Florida… the state’s economic woes will take a vacation.

AAA expects car traffic in Florida to mirror last years… but air travel should see a slight increase. AAA says package deals that offer discounts on airplane tickets, hotel stays, and car rentals are driving the increase.
