Legislation deregulating phone companies went into effect today. The legislation allows your landline bill to go up by as much as 20 percent every year. While most people will be paying more, some will actually get a break on their bills.
For decades people trying to reach Sarah Simmons have dialed the same seven numbers. Sarah has a landline phone, but worries an increase in the amount she pays for service could force her to nix the line.
“That wouldn’t help me none, not with my income. I just have one income. I’m a senior citizen.”
New legislation removes state oversight of companies providing traditional landline service. Deregulating phone companies will allow rates to increase up to 20 percent every year.”
Mary Jefferson says if her bill goes up she’s cancelling her service.
“I like my cell phone, I love my landline to, but if you can’t afford both of them you make a choice and that choice would be to take the cell phone.
Quality control and billing problems will also be out the state’s control. Until Wednesday the State Public Service Commissioner handled customer complaints about landline problems.
“We are now regulating basic service only, single line service.
While the changes may cost most customers more… Floridians with basic service are exempt from any increases. The legislation also expanses eligibility for Lifeline service, a program providing discounts for low income families.
Deregulating the phone companies is meant to help landline companies compete with cell and internet phone service providers.

This is a free market & country. There will almoast always be someone (company) out there trying to offer you better service at a better price than their competitors. This might actually turn out to be a good thing. Especially in todays economic times. Like the gas station price wars of yester year.
Don't cry now. You are the same ultra right wingers that always talk about less government involvement. The government steps out of the way and now you want them back in. Well this the free market. It you don't want to pay then just don't have a cell phone or home phone. It's simple.
"Ever REALLY read the terms & conditions of your cell ph contract? Get ready to take out a 2nd mortgage to pay a lawyer to end one of those!!" Thats why i never renewed my contract. I think alot of people get cought up with the cell phone companies pressuring their clients, to renew their contracts. When in all truth, once your contract ends you DO NOT have to renew the contract to continue service. I havent had a cell phone contract in the last 4 years. Still get the same service, at the same price it always has been, AND BEST of all, if they wanna play games with me over the services i use, i can tell them to cram it & cancell my service without having to pay to void a contract.
