Today’s Market Minute for Monday, July 6th.
The stock market was back open for business today after taking a break on Friday. And although there might have been plenty of fireworks over the weekend, today's market activity was not very exciting at all.
In fact, stocks opened lower from the get-go and continued to slide throughout the session. The market was able to trim some of it's losses after the release of a better-than-expected report on the services sector of the economy.
But even that positive report did little to help in the end. Most of the market weakness actually came from the energy sector.
Oil prices dropped sharply today with oil closing down almost 3 and a half percent. The price of a barrel of oil closed at just over 64 dollars a barrel.
Most of the market is treading water as it eagerly awaits earnings season which kicks off on Wednesday. Most investors hoping that the upcoming earnings season will shed some light on the overall strength of the economy.
For the day it was a mixed bag with the Dow and S& P finishing up on the day, while the Nasdaq finished a hair lower.
