Her newborn is already becoming a local celebrity.

Millions of babies are born everyday throughout the world. But only one baby has the distinction of being Bay County’s first baby born on New Year’s Day 2007.

Proud parents Ashley Payne and Wayne McPhail welcomed Nathan into the world at 2:24 a.m. Monday at Gulf Coast Medical Center.

For the third consecutive year, Gulf Coast Medical Center set a record for births in 2006. Throughout the year, more than 2,300 babies were born at this hospital. But this New Year’s was slower than usual.

"There were hardly any women in labor. There were only two. There was one woman at Bay Medical when usually it's packed here."

Baby Nathan weighs six pounds, eight ounces, and is 19 and a half inches long. Payne, who was in labor for more than 12 hours, says her delivery was hard.

Mommy, daddy and baby are all doing well, and are excited to get home and start the New Year with their new baby.

Nearly 80 percent of our area's births are delivered at Gulf Coast Medical Center.

Congratulations to Ashley and Wayne on their new addition.
