Boat Fire at Navy Base

A small fire aboard one of U-S Navy’s support ships caused some tense moments Tuesday at the Naval Support Activity in Panama City.

The "Athena 2" was moored at the navy base dock across from the Coast Guard station when it caught fire a little before 11:30 Tuesday morning.

The Navy’s fire department responded, then firefighters from the Thomas Drive fire department also pitched-in.

No one was on board at the time of the fire, so no one was hurt, according to Steve Applegate of the Navy base. "It s a Vietnam era boat. A gunboat that’s been converted to a naval support ship. Right now it appears faulty wiring my have been the cause."

Although faulty wiring may be suspected, the Navy is still investigating to pinpoint the exact cause of the fire.
