Catherine Zehner climbed off the corporate ladder and decided to pursue her passion.
"I'm the owner of 'The DogSmith of the Emerald Coast', which is a locally-owned and operated positive reinforcement dog training and pet care franchise,” said Zehner.
She also works for the Humane Society of Bay County--the only no-kill shelter in Bay County.
"What we found over the last 20 years of training is that positive reinforcement works just as better, if not quicker…plus you don't damage your relationship with your dog…."
"This is the start of what we call positive reinforcement clicker training..."
"One of the biggest things we see here is chewing and house-breaking issues, that's why a lot of dogs end up in the rescue in the first place, or get returned after they get adopted…"
"Particularly with rescue dogs like Daisy, you don't know what their history is; you don't know what can trigger that negative behavior into growling, biting, etc…."
There’s a reason Zehner has a ‘no-bite’ history.
"What I found is that if you have a good relationship with your dog, they're so much easier to train…"
"My job is the best job on earth, I get to work with dogs all day, even the more challenging ones, they're a big puzzle, at the heart of every dog…is just a teddy bear.”
Zehners main goal is to teach positive behavior so animals at the Humane Society find a forever home.
