A man Holmes County sheriff's investigators considered to be armed and dangerous is now behind bars in Bonifay.
Thirty-seven-year-old Franklin P. Smith III is accused of leading Holmes County deputies on a high speed chase. He jumped out of his car and escaped.
Authorities say he broke into a nearby home and stole some items including a gun and a 1997 Jeep Wrangler.
According to investigators, Smith's mother was watching NewsChannel 7 Thursday night when we ran our story about her son. Apparently he was staying in her Washington County home. The mother tried to get Smith to turn himself in to authorities.
She was not successful, but a neighbor apparently overheard their conversation and called the Sheriff's Office. Washington County deputies arrested Smith a little while later and turned him over to Holmes County investigators.
They say they recovered the Jeep, the handgun and most of the other stolen property when they arrested him. Smith was already facing a number of drug charges. Now he's in the Holmes County Jail, facing additional charges; two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, armed burglary and grand theft auto.
