Congressman Allen Boyd says he wants to meet with the people of Bay County on the health care reform bill.
He just doesn't want to use the panel format, and he doesn't want to do it this week.
Late Friday afternoon, the congressman postponed the forum planned for this Friday.
He cited the lack of a large enough venue and the successes of his previous town hall formats, like the one held Wednesday morning in Port St. Joe.
However, folks there didn't believe there was enough dialogue built into the session.
Dozens of Gulf County residents packed into the Gulf County Commissioner's meeting room Wednesday morning for Congressman Allen Boyd's 13th town hall meeting on the health care reform bill.
Tensions were high from the onset, as Boyd battled to get through his opening statement.
"We will give you a chance to speak shhhh..when? We are going to give you an hour to talk...Stop blowing smoke..are you going to talk the whole hour?"
The biggest complaint from the crowd was too much teaching and not enough talking.
"So again lets be courteous..."
Once folks got to voice their opinions they confronted Boyd with everything from the cap and trade bill to energy issues.
"Spirited, but constructive, good dialogue we talked about a lot of issues energy issues and some other issues we were able to deal with," says Boyd.
Hard feelings about Boyd's voting record on the cap and trade bill bled over into the health care reform issue.
"Whoever I talked to at your office said you were not going to vote for it and were not in favor of it less than a day later you voted for it and so i don't know if i should believe you or not that you will vote for this," says May Brown.
"Did you bring your voting card with you today? I did. Why? I've got you a new one...it says No"
"I don't think we need these 1600 pages."
"I guess you can see how most people feel...We are terrified of it it's called the scared bill."
Despite the hostilities, the congressman said he prefers this type of one-to-one exchange to the moderated panel discussion planned for Panama City Friday night.
"Some other folks planned this coming meeting and I committed to be there, but we're gonna see if we can't get this right before it's over."
And late Wednesday afternoon, Boyd decided to reschedule the final meeting in Bay County, to allow the public to ask all of the questions.
He also say his staff will find a larger venue that will accommodate more than 500 people.
The two event organizers were the former heads of the Bay County Republican and Democratic parties.
While disappointed, they agree with Boyd's decision.
"It's hard getting the rug pulled from under you," says Bobby Roberts.
Congressman Boyd says the Panama City meting will take place between October 15th and November 15th, before congress votes on the health care reform bill.
Those 500 people with ticket will definitely get a seat.
The location has yet to be determined.

I wish we could have a civil debate on Healthcare Reform ONLY! I'm on Disability, I have pd into it my whole working life, I have a catostrophic illness, I can get no supplemental coverage and cannot afford medicare D for medications, my husband has sm business locally and cannot afford health coverage for his employees or himself. We r hanging by a thread right now! Why is it medicare and VA is ok for some but not ok for all? We send our soldiers to fight our battles and die for us but nobody fights for there having better healthcare! Why is it that all of these ppl are against what they deem Socialized Medicine but are on Medicare which is Socialized medicine! Am I missing something here? I hope none of you end up in my circumstance, I'm very fortunate to have what I have, it makes me very sad that so many have been screwed by Private Insurance and Drug Co and those that have them and have not been in a catostrophic situation will find out what they have been paying for all this time!
America is being lead down a path of change...leaving us little hope. Straying away from the constitution, borrowing us into a hole, allowing other countries to gain more control, setting know felons and devious persons in high places and the list goes on... If our elected political representatives choose not to listen to those they are suppose to be serving, we the people will have no choice but to vote them out and pray for stronger ethical persons of good reputation and character. Fix Social Security and Medicare first and maybe "BIG" government can regain our support and trust. NO more spending!!!!!
I agree with you Allen that we need to stop the out of control govt that sends the union thugs to these events to disrupt them. And, the real proplem is that we won't know what exactly is in the bill until 30 minutes before the Democrats force it through. So until then, we can only guess what will be there according to past performance and ideas by them...
