Test Scores for Local Home Schoolers
Last week in a story aired on NewsChannel 7, Bay District school officials said there was a downward trend in test scores for local home school students. Since then, numerous home school parents have disputed that claim.

Florida home schoolers do not need to take standardized tests or submit scores to the district. But, some parents elect for their students to take those assessments as part of their yearly evaluation.

In a test of approximately 80 Bay County home schoolers, about half scored two or more grades above their grade level on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. Home school parents say this shows the system works.

But, school officials stick by their guns. They claim they see a negative trend in the small number of home school students who choose to take the FCAT and send their scores to the district.

Leanne Kirksey, a local home school parent, says, "From what I've seen, a lot of people don't test here because they're not required to. But, from what I've seen, the kids are usually a couple of grades ahead of public school peers."

Joan Harris, director of student services at Bay District schools, says, "FCAT is specifically testing Sunshine State standards, which is what's used to develop the curriculum in Florida schools. So, students who are not in the public schools and who are following a different curriculum, the trend, from what I've seen when the test comes in, the scores go down on a regular basis."

Part of the benefit of home schooling is the freedom to choose the curriculum, which may deviate from the public school system.

Hmm...comments on public education didn't hurt my feelings. Someone seems to be a little touchy on this subject. I'm not saying anything negative about either educational choices. It just seems to me that people want to get in a whizzing contest over which is better...homeschooling or attending public schools? I think it's not really a matter which child from either gets a better education but rather what works best for your own child/children.

Yes, enough is enough. Homeschool families are constantly bombarded with misguided and unnecessary criticism. The fact that homeschooled students score better on standardized tests is not meant to hurt public school counterparts' feelings or start childish arguments. It is a fact, and homeschool families should not have to keep that quiet and allow false reports because it might someone’s feelings.

Oh enough is enough! My child is smarter than your child because he/she is homeschooled or attends public school. It all sounds so childish! Homeschool works for some and public school works for others. It should all be about what works for your child, not which one is getting a better education. Personally I went to public school and so did my child...it worked well for us. I am successful, so is my child. I am sure most homeschooled parents and children are successful, too. The important thing is for our children to get an education that works best for them!
