Messer is the youngest son of Lynn Haven Police Chief David Messer.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the younger Messer had just left a Thomas Drive nightclub and was driving at a high rate of speed when he lost control, spun and hit a utility pole in front of the Summerwind Condominiums.

The car then burst into flames with Messer trapped inside. The medical examiner's office says it will use dental records to positively identify Messer as the driver. He had just bought the new 2004 Toyota Camry last Friday.

Meanwhile, in another accident, a 47-year-old Panama City man is dead after a head-on collision in the St. Andrew area Monday night. Donald Swearington died Tuesday in an area hospital.

Swearington was a passenger in one of the two vehicles that hit head-on in the 3400 block of West 19th Street about 7:00 p.m. Monday night. Panama City Police say the crash is still under investigation.
