Hero Honored

A local man, who is being credited with saving a motorist from drowning earlier this year, received praise from Springfield city officials.

Commissioners honored 23-year-old Gregory Hill at Monday night's commission meeting.

Hill lives across the street from the City Boat Ramp at Lake Martin.

Back in January, 43-year-old Carlton Dexter Baker accidentally hit his car's gas pedal instead of the brakes, and drove his car into the lake. The car flipped upside down trapping Baker, who was briefly knocked unconscious.

Hill jumped into the cold water, pulled Baker out of his car, and helped him to shore.

City officials say Hill deserves the award, especially since this is the second time he's rescued someone from this lake, after the same type accident.

Fortunately for Hill, he had prior experience. He worked as a lifeguard at Shipwreck Island Water Park on Panama City Beach for several summers.
