The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about another letter scam circulating in our area.
Here’s how this one works.
Residents receive a letter in the mail from a Canadian based company that informs them they have won a type of lottery in Georgia. The letter includes a check.
Recipients are told they must cash the check to cover their charges/fees before they can collect their winnings. They are then advised to call someone to coordinate a payment process.
The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office advises there is multiple postal, e-mail, and phone scams targeting potential victims in our area at any given time. Many of these schemes originate from out of the country.
Always keep in mind, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If in doubt, check with a local law enforcement agency.
