19,000 Ballots Are Recounted After Voting Complications

Bay County elections officials will be "recounting" 19,000 ballots Wednesday morning after serious complications with the ballot itself.

The problem came in the form of the small black squares on the left side of the ballot, called timing marks.

Some ballots had too few timing marks, while others had too many. The error resulted in Missouri Rep. Dick Gephardt taking a 2-1 lead over statewide winner U.S. Sen. John Kerry.

Elections officials say the problem is being taking care of.

"The vote is well taken care of, and the process works. And if it has some error we're able to find those and see those. The voter should find comfort in that we were able to see these things," Bay County Supervisor of Elections Mark Anderson says.
