Granite now has to pay $30,000 in liquidated damages for each additional day it needs to finish the new twin span Hathaway bridges.

The $81.5 million project, which began in February 2001, was supposed to have been finished by Oct. 23 last year. It was plagued by a high rate of employee turnover, two fatal accidents, and persistent rains, especially last summer.

The rainy weather helped Granite get a 92-day extension on the time limit to construct the new bridges. However, that extension ran out Jan. 24 and Granite asked for another extension. Thursday, the state Department of Transportation said no to that request.

That means a $30,000 a day penalty retroactive to January 24th. Thursday was the 54th day of the fines, which now total $1.62 million.
