The expanded facility was a joint project by the county government and the city of Chipley. Shelter officials say they've already seen an increase in the number of animals they've been able to adopt-out to new homes. But they're still euthanizing a lot of animals. They hope to change that trend as they move past this first phase to a larger vision for the shelter's future.

"Well, I just love animals and I think it's important here in Washington County and the City of Chipley to have an animal shelter and to be able to take care of the animals. I just appreciate everyone who donates their time and those who come in and adopt the animals, and who work in the facility."

State prison inmates did the majority of the work on the renovation project.
