Fifty-nine-year-old Jerry Gates of Wewahitchka was convicted of felony drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Gates was arrested at his Wewahitchka home in January of last year. Sheriff’s officials seized 171 grams of marijuana along with paraphernalia.
Yesterday, a jury took barely ten minutes to find gates guilty of all charges except one. Gulf County Sheriff, Michael Hammond, says he's pleased with the conviction.
"I consider Jerry Gates a friend of mine. He's likable, but when you break the law, you have to be brought to justice unfortunately. And now he faces prison time for these charges."
The sheriff says Gates has faced criminal charges before, but he was never convicted, that is until Wednesday.
