Bridge Work Continues

Updated: Mon 8:57 AM, Mar 29, 2004

It’s the third time in about a month explosives have been used to help clear away the old bridge.

Traffic on the new Hathaway Bridge twin spans was halted for about 15 minutes for the demolition. The series of explosive charges could be heard and felt two miles away.

Granite Construction Company is wrapping up work on the second of the twin spans and removal of the old bridge has to be completed so the final approaches can be put in place.

There was somewhat of a traffic backup Friday morning while the new bridge was closed as a safety measure, but the backup was nowhere near the massive traffic jams that have plagued the bridge project in recent weeks.

The demolition of the entire old bridge is now more than half completed, and the second of the two new spans is close to being completed. Eastbound traffic is expected to be shifted to the second of the new bridges by the end of April.
