Bayside Utilities wants to raise its rates for 287 customers in the Bayside subdivision behind the beach K-Mart. The utility has asked to increase water rates to roughly $36 a month. Sewer rates would double to $64 a month.
Customers aren't happy about the proposal. Dorothy Burton owns the mobile home park affected by the rate hike. She says the increase isn't fair to the families who need to live in affordable housing.
"The fact that water for the community that is 50 feet away from our residents is about half the price just is an untenable situation."
Leanard Jeter agrees with Burton saying the utility hasn't provided the resources needed in the community.
"The reason the cost of maintaining has skyrocketed is the method of operation that they use to operate the utility. They do not repair or fix anything with their employees."
The Florida Public Service Commission will meet this Thursday at 6:00 at the Panama City Beach Senior Center off Middle Beach Road.
