Officials say they've narrowed the search for a 100-square-mile test range to Taylor, Dixie and Levy Counties in the Big Bend.
Project manager Jesse Borthwick says, “The Big Bend area is the least populated coastline in the whole U.S.”
Dixie County, for example, has 20 people per square mile.
Experts say the odds of an out-of-control weapon hitting a house or killing someone would be much lower than at Eglin's current range location near Fort Walton Beach.
Eglin officials held a Town Hall meeting in Dixie County last week with county commissioners and about three-dozen citizens.
