Both Hathaway Bridge Spans Open, But Third Lane Closed Off

THE EASTBOUND SPAN OF
THE HATHAWAY BRIDGE MAY BE
OPEN, BUT ONLY TWO LANES
WILL BE ACCESSIBLE ON BOTH
SPANS BECAUSE OF ANOTHER
TRAFFIC PROJECT.

THE THOMAS DRIVE-HIGHWAY
98 FLYOVER PROJECT IS
DELAYING THE OPENING OF THE
THIRD LANE ON EACH SPAN.

THE WESTBOUND SPAN STILL
HAS TO BE STRIPED TO
INCLUDE THREE LARGE LANES
AND AN EMERGENCY LANE.
THE FINISHED PRODUCT
WILL LOOK LIKE THE
EASTBOUND SPAN.

TRANSPORTATION OFFICIALS WERE CONCERNED THREE LANES
WOULD CREATE MORE
CONGESTION.

"We're trying to avoid a
bottleneck. The bridge is
striped for three lanes.
They're just keeping two
active, because of
construction at Thomas
Drive. They don't want to
create more congestion than
what we're already having to
deal with," says Granite Construction spokesman, Bill Crittenden.

DEPARTMENT OF
TRANSPORTATION OFFICIALS
SAY THE THIRD LANE ON BOTH
SPANS COULD BE OPEN IN A
COUPLE OF WEEKS.
