It's the latest move in an annexation battle that began a few months go between the beach and Panama City officials.
Panama City Beach Mayor Lee Sullivan wants to get the city as close to the Hathaway Bridge as possible. Sullivan discussed a meeting he had with the Florida Department of Transportation where DOT suggested the transfer of Alternate Highway 98 to the city.
The road would extend from Pinnacle Port on the west end of the beach all the way to where the road meets Back Beach near the Hathaway Bridge.
Sullivan says buying the highway is a good idea and it would actually allow residents directly on the road to request annexation.
"Would make it a whole lot easier for people that were along that roadway to have an opportunity to annex into the city," he says.
The council members want a more detailed discussion about the transfer and better understanding about the cost of maintaining the entire road.
