The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office wants to let the public know there are a number of bogus e-mails circulating in the area.

One of the e-mails refers to a woman in Destin who claims a man put sugar in her gas to disable her car. She says this was reported to authorities and is under investigation. The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office has no record of any such incident being reported to the agency.

The other victim says someone smashed her car window and stole her purse. She then says a police officer advises local women to arm themselves due to growing dangers on the streets.

Bogus e-mails like this that spread alarming misinformation are not uncommon. You can always check with your local law enforcement agency.

Also, web sites such as snopes.com are designed to help people ferret out urban myths and phony emails. In fact, the story about men disabling women’s cars by putting sugar in gas tanks is currently featured on snopes.com, but is based out of another area.
