The man accused of raping and killing a 13-year-old girl at a St. Andrews motel in 2008, was back in court Wednesday for the latest phase of his sentencing.
The family of Melinda Hinson spoke directly to Matthew Caylor, telling the court why he should be put to death. The jury has already recommended the death penalty.
Caylor didn't take the stand during his murder trial, but Wednesday he did. He repeatedly said he did not rape Melinda Hinson. He said he was very upset from his previous sex offender conviction from Georgia, combine that with drugs and that's why he said he snapped.
He strangled Hinson with his hands, and then used a 15-foot long telephone cord to finish it off. A year and a half later, Caylor was convicted of 1st degree murder. .
Caylor and prosecutor Larry Basford had a very heated exchange during Wednesday's hearing.
"So are you telling the court what you told your father that you hope they give you the death penalty, Larry Basford said.”No, I do not want the death penalty," Caylor said. "That's not what you told your dad was it," Basford said.
"Ok let me ask you something, if you did," Caylor said. Did you tell your dad that you hope they give you the death penalty, Basford said ."Yes I did."
Let me ask you this," Caylor said. "No further questions, Basford said. " I know you don't have anymore questions," Caylor added.
Melinda Hinson's family members also spoke out in court. They said Caylor knew exactly what he was doing the entire time and that he should pay for his crime.
Judge Costello will ultimately decide if Caylor deserves the death penalty.
She will sentence him on December 11th.

This guy does not deserve to live. He took a child's life. He deserves no sympathy. My friend's girlfriend got assaulted and the cops did nothing. Life in prison has been recently proven to cost much more than death. We need to issue more death sentences for scum like this.
You know what gets me? If this man goes to prison for life. Our/my tax dollars will support him! He will never have to worry about a roof over his head, he will never starve, he will always have access to medical care! How about them apples! I can not even afford medical care for my own children right now, every night I say an extra prayer thanking God that I have a job and so forth and this man who sees life as nothing will be taken care of for the rest of his life! (should he get life) Not on my tax dollar! This epidemic of abuse and murder on children has to stop. I say pass a law if you murder or rape a child any where in the United States, if convicted you WILL be put to death, no questions asked! People spend life in prison for lesser convictions! Lucky that wasn't my child is all I got to say!
"Convicted killer Matthew Caylor was back in court Wednesday. This time pleading with Judge Deedee Costello not to give him the death penalty." Did I read that right? Caylor prays on a 13 child, who he then strangles with his bare hands and a 14 foot phone cord because he was still upset about his conviction in Ga. Then has the audacity to try to plea but..but..he didn't rape her! Is that all you got buddy? You took the life of a child who was just beginning her life. Did this little girl have a chance to plead for her life? Be done with him because if he goes to prison for life he will be put in some type of protective custody which will cost the state millions during his life just to keep him there. This is an outrage and I just can not believe he would think your honorable Judge D. Castello would be that easily persuaded to focus on the words of a very sick man.Your rights were lost the day you took the breath of this child
