Port St. Joe Judge Allows Housing Lawsuit to Proceed

The Millwood subdivision was built in the 1950s in Port St. Joe. More was added to the subdivision in the 1980s.

Five property owners want class-action status for their lawsuit, with attorney Steve Medina saying it's a case of “environmental racism.”

The lawsuit claims St. Joe Paper, as the company used to be known, engaged in a conspiracy to actively conceal the hazardous waste from Millview residents. It was discovered during an investigation of possible contamination from the former location of the St. Joe Paper Mill, which has been closed for several years.

Only one of the eight original counts in the lawsuit has been dropped, but a judge would have to certify class-action before more people could be included.
