Chief David Slusser spoke about the seven Florida officers who were killed while working in the last year.

Thursday, police took time to remember how important their jobs are to keep others safe while risking their own safety.

Chief Slusser hopes others will also take time to remember what law enforcement means to a community.

"Today is when reality strikes when we realize that officers each and everyday, every second of everyday, are risking their safety, risking their lives to protect others," said Slusser.

Mayor Gerry Clemons and Sheriff Frank McKeithen, along with several retired police officers, also attended Thursday's memorial service.
